Heineken Long Neck Bottle Ad 2
Heineken changed it's look with a new long neck bottle. This is a combo shot of a photo I took in Holland a couple of years ago and a product shot of a Heineken bottle I recently took for my portfolio. Continuing in the beverage advertisement series for my portfolio. (This image a little more saturated)
Giant in the Lobby
The Pool Table 2
I had a photography gig today in a beach-home, steps from the water and sand in Playa del Rey. A beautiful sunny day...that felt more like summer, than early spring. It was an interior design shoot. This place had a game room on the bottom floor, where a pool table was the main feature inside, and an underground pool area was the feature outside. I staged a shot, for fun, with the interior designer...she has better looking hands than mine. When I got home, it looked a little surreal, or unnatural, so I decided to have a little fun with photoshop to make it a bit stranger. Everything in this photo is, "as shot", except the water on the table(obviously) and the ridiculous floating tube. The concept was easy and light, but this actually took me longer than I wanted to in editing. I'll set up a link to the original soon.
Lost in a book
Last week I made the mistake of driving to the library. I ended up having to pay $9 for parking and then got caught in some nasty traffic. So today, I decided to take the subway. I brought my camera and decided to get a shot of the subway as it came rushing in through the tunnel. I snapped a couple of quick shots with a high ISO setting of 2000 at aperture 4.0, just to get an idea of framing and what lens to choose before setting up the tripod. Once I was satisfied with the test shots, I broke out the tripod and set it pretty close to the ledge. Just before I could get a shot off with a lower ISO and shutter speed, I was scolded by security and kicked out of the station. They don't like tripods apparently. Long story short...I had to settle with using one of my test shots at a high ISO setting, so the result is grainier than I'd like. But rather than go back and risk a fine, I decided to work with it as is.

slightly less green, more cyan
This came out pretty realistic! Every bruise, scratch, swelling, and redness is all digital enhancement in photoshop. There was no make up for this concept.
Malibu Real Estate 2012
This started out as just a funny little idea. The story here is that I had this swimsuit-shoot, about a year ago, on the beach at sunset, but it was anything but warm. There was a big rain storm coming from the west and it was just reaching the coast. The sky was beautiful, lit with brilliant colors and several different layers of clouds. Besides the giant cumulonimbus cloud formations, there was a thin layer above and then another layer of clouds below. It was absolutely gorgeous, but also a little frightening, when you're about to carry out a photo shoot. The model kept a robe on during the lighting tests, to stay warm. The result was interesting, and I kept it in my mind to eventually play around with it in photoshop. Her stiff pose and transfixed expression against an apocalyptic background inspired me to photoshop this photo. I'm not a believer in the whole Mayan 2012 calendar-world-destruction-theory, but I've heard enough theories and worried rants about 2012 being the beginning of chaos. Malibu might not be such a hot real estate investment if terror comes from the west. Anyway, after staring at this photo for hours, while editing it, I think my next photoshop project will be a serene and peaceful one.

I get a lot of questions about my editing work, so I posted this as an example of how it's possible to clear up blemishes and to color correct a photograph. This photo was sent to me. I didn't photograph this. I was simply hired to edit the original. Basically what I was given was a photo where the subject chose to take the shot without any type of make-up and the photographer didn't use enough lights to compensate for it. The subject has good looking strong features, but when lit a certain way in high definition, blemishes are magnified. The photographer has one softened light pointed at the subject from slightly above camera, and one hard light from behind off camera left. By having only one light on the front of his face, from above, this will create shadows any place on the face that is at a non-reflective angle. You can notice how under his eyes, the shade and lines are dramatized because of the lighting and lack of make-up. One way to fix this with lighting is to take another soft light from below and point it up at the subject. Having the light set at a lower setting than the light positioned above will make the result look more natural. Another issue with the original photograph is the white balance. You can see how the skin color is dull, with more blue-ish and cyan skin tones. What I did was restore the warmth to the color along with removing any skin blemishes. My goal is to always touch up a photo with the concept being simply to compensate for the lack of make-up or lighting in a photograph, rather than making the subject look unreal. Lighting a scene or subject is something that can take hours for photographers, so when you are on a photo shoot that is constantly on the move, or the subject is repositioning his head in many ways, you either have to make the lighting more universal or make up for it in editing. Thank god for photoshop!
Too soon? Yeah, way too soon. Football season is about 5 or 6 months away. In fact there may be a season lockout this year...which means no football til late 2012. So this is a bit pointless really. What's worse is I'm a huge Laker's fan, and their playoff run is about to start. So why did I choose the Chargers during basketball season? Excuse/Stretching of the truth: I have the flu, so I'm not thinking straight. I do have the flu. But I'm thinking fine. In all fairness, I was watching an ESPN special today on future draft picks, so give me a break...I got inspired. It's fair to say that this is probably the nerdiest thing I've done in photoshop in awhile. The photo of the subject is fine, but spending a couple of hours showing my love of the game, and more specifically the San Diego chargers...is nerdville. Anyway, I could have spent another hour on this to make it look a bit more real, but this will have to do. GO CHARGERS...2012?

Corporations need to eat too
It's tax day. This is for all of those regular folk who have to pay taxes instead of receiving a check this year...while giant corporations get huge tax breaks, and often don't have to pay hardly any taxes at all.
Concerned viewers: please don't send me canned foods to give to the model. This is a photoshop manipulation. I removed about 30 pounds from her, digitally, and added in some bone structure to enhance the starvation effect. But if you must. She likes organic black beans and whole kernal sweet corn : )

Steve Vai promo
You may not be able to read the print, but this is intended for larger viewing. This promo is for investor interest, rather than public advertising. In-other-words, it's not a print ad.
I was commissioned to photograph the rock and roll guitar icon, Steve Vai for a new website he has created. The site is an interactive video site, like youtube, but specifically for music. You can watch a video of your favorite artist and, while viewing, purchase the same gear he/she uses, download guitar tablature, and purchase concert tickets. Not a bad idea! Good luck Steve!
